Talking Points
Opening up lines of communication became our mission when we grew our family through adoption in the past year, and in this endeavor, we stumbled upon a simple yet powerful tool that we all love– a deck of cards.
These aren't your ordinary playing cards; they're gateways to the thoughts and feelings of our children. Each card holds a question, carefully curated for family discussions. Another set, designed specifically for kids, introduces whimsical queries that spark curiosity and laughter.
Gathering around the dinner table, we embark on a shared story journey. The rules are simple: everyone takes a turn answering the question on the card. No pressure, no judgment. If a question feels too personal, it can be gracefully skipped.
In the beginning, hesitation lingered in the air. Formulating thoughts into words was a challenge, especially for our shy ones. Yet, the ice began to melt with time, patience, and a sprinkle of humor.
Months passed, and what was once a tentative exercise became a cherished family tradition. The kids eagerly anticipate the post-dinner ritual, encouraging their friends to join. As parents, we've marveled at the insights unveiled during these sessions.
These cards have become a bridge, allowing us to glimpse into our children's minds. We've learned about their dreams, fears, and the intricacies of their young hearts. The magic lies in the questions and the understanding that everyone's voice matters.
What started as a means to draw out the quietest whispers has evolved into a symphony of shared laughter, thoughtful reflections, and a profound sense of connection. Through these cards, we've learned more about our kids and communicated a vital message – we are here, ready to listen, and eager to honor the uniqueness each child brings to our family. Our journey continues, one card at a time, strengthening the bonds that make us a beautifully diverse and connected family.
